The collector’s perspective

The most rewarding Nautilus is the reference whose proportions, movement and documented condition suit the collection—not simply the dial attracting the largest premium.

The Nautilus rewards a slower inspection than its fame encourages. Begin with the broad bezel, the lateral shoulders and the way the first bracelet links meet the case. Then turn the watch sideways. A few millimetres of thickness, an altered bracelet taper or a soft polished edge can change the experience more than a fashionable dial colour. This is a collection in which external architecture deserves the same attention as the movement.

The name covers several different collecting propositions: an early two-hand Jumbo, a compact 3800, the modern steel 5711, an asymmetrical moon-phase watch, a substantial chronograph and a finely set jewellery watch. In 2026, the fiftieth anniversary adds ultra-thin two-hand precious-metal models. The useful question is therefore which Nautilus, in which configuration, and with what evidence. The reference index and dated price observations below are designed to make those distinctions explicit.

Scope of this studyResearched 25 October 2026. This guide maps major wristwatch generations and complication families, with the 2026 desk clock identified separately. It is not an exhaustive register of dial suffixes, special orders or individual production numbers.

Design & inheritance

A lineage in time

1976

The original Jumbo

The 3700/1A establishes the porthole-inspired silhouette and integrated steel bracelet.[1]

1981

The medium-size alternative

The 3800 introduces a smaller format and central seconds, creating a distinct wearing proposition.[6]

1998–2005

The transitional references

3710 adds a winding-zone indicator; 3711 returns to a large white-gold time-and-date watch; 3712 introduces the asymmetrical calendar, moon-phase and power-reserve layout.[7][8][9][2]

2006

A redesigned collection

The thirtieth anniversary brings 5711, 5712, the medium 5800 and the first Nautilus chronograph, 5980.[2]

2016–2018

Anniversary and grand complication

The fortieth-anniversary 5711/1P and 5976/1G precede the 5740 perpetual calendar, the collection’s first Grand Complication in 2018.[20][15]

2021–2022

The steel farewell and white-gold successor

Green and Tiffany Blue versions close the steel 5711 story. The 5811/1G follows in 2022 with a 41 mm white-gold case and bracelet.[3][28][12]

2026

Fifty years, interpreted through thinness

5610/1P, 5810/1G and 5810G use the micro-rotor 240; the separate 958G is an eight-day desk clock.[1][21][22][23]

The reference library

Know what you are looking at.

A map of the major reference families covered in this study. Grouped numbers are related variants, not a claim that every dial or material shares identical specifications. Check the complete reference and the individual watch.

3700/1; 3700/11

1976–1990 family

Original large-format Nautilus, two hands and date; steel and precious-metal executions.

Movement 28-255 C automatic

Assess case geometry, period bracelet and dial together; suffix and metal must be documented.

[5][2][24]

3800/1

1981–2006

Medium-size integrated-bracelet Nautilus with central seconds.

Movement 335 SC in documented early examples; verify later calibre individually

A separate proportion, not a substitute Jumbo. Dial, material and movement variants require specimen-level checks.

[6][2]

4700/1 and related ladies’ variants

1980s–2006

Early small-size Nautilus branch.

Movement Verify the exact execution

Include these when researching the family’s scale and jewellery history; do not transfer modern 7118 specifications.

[2]

3710/1A

1998–2006

Large steel model with Roman numerals and winding-zone indication.

Movement 330-family automatic with IZR indication

Its unusual display is central to the appeal; understand its operation before judging a stationary indicator.

[7][2]

3711/1G

2004–2006

Large white-gold time-and-date model with black horizontally patterned dial.

Movement 315 SC

Similar outline to later watches conceals a different reference and material proposition.

[8][2]

3712/1A

2005–2006

Short-lived steel model with date, moon phases, reserve and small seconds.

Movement 240 PS IRM C LU

Compare dial layout and power-reserve dots with documented examples; published production totals are not settled factory counts.

[9]

5800/1A

2006–2021 generation

Early/later blue-gradient steel versions and the silvery-white dial.

Movement 315 SC initially; 324 S C subsequently; 26-330 S C from 2019

The white -011 was offered 2012–2019. Inspect the actual calibre rather than assigning it from the sale date alone.

[2][10][3]

5711/1A-014; 5711/1300A-001

2021 farewell

Olive-green steel dial; the /1300 version has factory baguette diamonds.

Movement 26-330 S C

The diamond-set model is a separate factory reference, not a standard watch with added stones.

[3]

5711/1A-018

2021 Tiffany & Co. edition

Tiffany Blue dial and anniversary case-back inscription; 170-piece edition.

Movement 26-330 S C

[1]

Read the case before the reference number

The 3700 carries the original idea particularly clearly: a broad, low case with two hands and a date, powered by the thin 28-255 C, based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre ébauche and finished by Patek Philippe. A central seconds hand is therefore not an original 3700 feature. The 3800’s central seconds and smaller architecture are meaningful changes, not mere scaling. The latter can offer a more balanced fit where a Jumbo’s lateral span dominates the wrist.

Editorial assessment: compare watches at the same camera angle. Reflections can make a softened bezel look crisp. Look for an even brushed field, a clearly defined polished bevel, symmetrical shoulders and coherent finishing around the bracelet attachment. A professionally restored watch may be attractive and wearable, but its restoration history should remain part of the buying decision. “Unpolished” is a claim to substantiate, not a grade that photographs automatically prove.

[5][6]

Why published diameters seem to disagree

Patek’s 2006 technical sheet gives the 5711 several dimensions: 43 mm across the hinges and 40 mm on a diagonal axis. Auction descriptions may use yet another width convention. Current product pages specify the 10-to-4-o’clock measurement. Comparing a historical ear-to-ear figure with a modern diagonal diameter creates a false impression of growth or shrinkage.

Editorial assessment: ask for the measurement axis whenever a listing looks inconsistent. Then consider effective bracelet span, case height and how the first links articulate. A paper diameter cannot establish fit. For a remote purchase, request a side view on a wrist of known circumference and an image of the bracelet laid without tension. A well-fitting smaller reference is a more convincing long-term choice than a prestigious size that slides around the wrist.

[2][11]

The transitional watches have their own logic

The 3710’s winding-zone display and Roman numerals make it visually separate from the horizontal-dial mainstream. The 3711/1G brings white gold and calibre 315 SC into a deceptively familiar shape. The 3712 is more consequential mechanically: its small seconds, date, moon phases and reserve are arranged around the micro-rotor 240 architecture. Phillips documents its brief 2005–2006 production and differences from the succeeding 5712.

Editorial assessment: short production is interesting only when the watch itself survives convincingly. On a 3712, compare the power-reserve markings, dial furniture, case and paperwork as a group. A three-dot or four-dot description is a starting point, not a complete provenance argument. Avoid paying a premium calculated from an unsupported production estimate. For a collector who enjoys research, these transitional models offer more to investigate than a colour preference alone.

[7][8][9]

The 5711 is several generations inside one silhouette

The launch 5711 used calibre 315 SC; documented later examples use 324 S C. Patek confirms that 26-330 S C arrived in 2019, adding stop-seconds and winding-system refinements. Its 2021 release also distinguishes the early blue -001, later blue -010, silvery-white -011 and olive-green -014. Those identifiers are more useful than loosely applied “first series” or “piano dial” labels.

Editorial assessment: ask for a clear movement photograph and a written account of service replacements. A purchase date can lag manufacture, and an authentic replacement dial may change the collecting proposition without making the watch counterfeit. Separate original configuration, current configuration and what the seller can prove. With the 5711, premiums often cluster around tiny distinctions; evidence should become more exact as the premium grows.

The 5811 follows a different proposition: a 41 mm white-gold case, two-part construction, 26-330 S C and a clasp with lockable adjustment. The extra metal value does not determine the secondary-market hierarchy. Try the weight and adjustment before deciding whether the successor offers the ownership experience you want.

[2][10][3][11]

Choose the complication by how it changes the watch

The 5712’s micro-rotor movement supports a deliberately asymmetrical display while keeping the current rose-gold model 8.52 mm thick. The 5726 takes a more symmetrical annual-calendar approach and needs a calendar correction at the end of February when kept running. The 5740 uses the 240 Q perpetual calendar and remains only 8.42 mm thick. These are different solutions to wearing calendar information; a larger number of functions does not automatically make one more satisfying.

The 5980’s combined hours-and-minutes counter contrasts with the 5990’s chronograph plus separate local and home time. The latter couples its date to local time and integrates time-zone pushers on the left of the case. Its 12.53 mm height gives it a distinctly more substantial presence. Editorial assessment: operate each function before purchase with competent assistance. A calendar that looks correct in a photograph and a chronograph hand pointing at zero are not demonstrations of reliable operation.

[13][14][15][16][17]

The smaller and gem-set branches deserve independent assessment

The 7118 is not simply a reduced 5711: its wave-pattern dial, hand shapes and 35.2 mm case create a different character. The current steel automatic uses 26-330 S C. The 32 mm 7010 has a quartz E23-250 S C and a thinner 6.9 mm case. Both have a coherent reason to exist, and neither should be judged solely against the resale hierarchy of steel Jumbo models.

Editorial assessment: choose dimensions and operating convenience before gender labels. For gem-set pieces, establish the complete factory reference and compare the setting pattern, clasp and paperwork against that exact execution. Factory jewellery, later authorised replacement parts and aftermarket alteration are distinct facts. A photograph of sparkling stones cannot settle the distinction. Include missing links and damaged settings in the cost discussion; a low headline price can conceal an expensive fit or restoration problem.

[18][19][4]

2016 and 2026 celebrate different ideas

The 2016 pair is conspicuous: the 700-piece platinum 5711/1P and 1,300-piece white-gold 5976/1G use commemorative dials, with the chronograph measuring 44 mm diagonally. The 2026 wristwatches move toward restraint. The 38 mm platinum 5610/1P and 41 mm white-gold 5810/1G each number 2,000; the white-gold 5810G on a composite strap numbers 1,000. Calibre 240 places the fiftieth-anniversary inscription on its micro-rotor.

Editorial assessment: the 2026 two-hand display changes the rhythm of the dial. Buyers who want a date and visible running seconds should notice their absence before treating these editions as replacements for a 5811. The strap model’s baguette markers are another substantive difference. An edition size establishes an announced supply limit, not the number offered for sale at any moment or a future price floor.

[20][21][22][23]

Editorial assessment

Its place within Patek—and what may sustain collector interest

Editorial assessment: within Patek Philippe, the Nautilus makes case-and-bracelet architecture a central part of the attraction. It carries the manufacture’s calendar and chronograph expertise into a recognisably sporting design, while a dress watch may foreground restraint and a traditional grand complication may foreground its mechanism. The thin 5740 shows how these priorities can coexist. This position explains the family’s relevance without requiring a claim about sales share or investment performance.

Future desirability could be supported by recognisable design, distinctive proportions, documented reference differences and examples retaining convincing condition. It could weaken when premiums depend mainly on temporary colour preferences, an exaggerated rarity story or extrapolation from exceptional auction records. Serviceability, bracelet completeness and the cost of buying and selling remain practical constraints.

For a collector who values fit and design history, a 3800 or 5800 merits comparison with the more prominent 5711; obtain current like-for-like quotations before calling either an opportunity. A complication-led buyer may find more personal value in 5712 or 5740. The 2026 editions offer a fresh two-hand interpretation, but announced edition size alone cannot establish durable demand.

[1][6][2][13][15][21][22][29]

Originality, service and authenticity require separate questions

Patek distinguishes the Certificate of Origin supplied with a new watch from an Extract from the Archives, which transcribes historical records. The original certificate is not reissued. An extract is valuable research evidence, but should not be used as shorthand for a complete physical examination of the watch offered today. Compare the case and movement numbers, recorded configuration, sale history and service documents.

Editorial assessment: make the seller describe the bezel, dial, hands, bracelet and clasp separately. Ask whether polishing, laser repair, reluming, replacement parts or gem setting is known. A reputable inspection should address the movement as well as visible signatures. No single font, weight or serial-number lookup authenticates an entire watch. On vintage examples, honest ageing and disclosed service work can be preferable to a cosmetically immaculate watch with an unexplained history.

[31][32]

Preserving the watch includes preserving its geometry

Patek’s current care guidance recommends service at eight-to-ten-year intervals and directs owners to the specific user guide for water resistance and setting. Current Nautilus pages commonly state 30 m; historical brochures can state 120 m. Those are dated specifications, not proof that a particular used watch is watertight. Its seals, crown, repairs and test history matter.

Editorial assessment: obtain a service assessment appropriate to age and symptoms, rather than ordering cosmetic refinishing by default. Record the watch’s condition before work and agree the scope in writing. A mechanically healthy watch with visible use can be an excellent collection piece. Budget time as well as money: a complicated watch awaiting parts is not available to wear, however attractive its purchase price appeared.

[32][2][11]

Compare the full Singapore acquisition cost

Editorial assessment: request a written SGD quote that identifies the exact reference, dial, metal, bracelet length, documents and service position. Compare it with the same specification abroad, not a broad online model average. Add currency conversion, payment charges, shipping, insurance and any required service. An auction buyer’s total is not the amount the consignor receives; a dealer’s asking price is not its immediate purchase bid.

For a cross-border purchase, check the applicable import and declaration treatment before committing. Singapore’s official arrival guidance directs travellers carrying goods above GST import relief to declare and pay through Customs@SG. Do not assume that wearing a newly purchased watch settles its tax treatment. Keep the invoice and shipping records, and distinguish personal-travel rules from a commercial import. The practical comparison is the documented landed cost of the actual watch.

The evidence above deliberately separates retail, a statistical market estimate and realised auction results. Its dates are part of the evidence. The 1981 yellow-gold 3700, olive-green 5711 and Tiffany charity watch are different objects with different audiences; averaging their prices would convey little about a standard steel watch.

Editorial assessment: construct a comparison set narrowly enough to be useful. Match reference suffix, metal, dial, movement generation, bracelet completeness, documents and service position. Then ask what a dealer would pay today as well as what comparable dealers ask. That spread describes the friction of ownership more honestly than a single premium-to-retail percentage. No figure here is a buyback guarantee or a forecast.

Buying in SingaporeCompare the final price for the actual watch, with currency, seller fees, delivery, applicable taxes, service needs and bracelet or strap costs made explicit. Ask for a current written SGD quotation. A published overseas figure is not a local dealer buyback offer, and a listing does not prove a completed sale.

Editorial assessment

Collect the architecture, then buy the evidence

Editorial assessment: the 3700 suits a collector prepared to research an individual vintage object; the 3800 offers a compelling alternative scale. A carefully documented 5711 remains an instructive modern reference, while the 5811 is more persuasive if its gold weight and adjustable bracelet are desirable in their own right. The 5712 and 5740 make particularly clear cases for studying movement architecture alongside case thickness.

The 2026 editions deserve evaluation as new interpretations of the design. Their two-hand restraint can be attractive without implying that earlier watches have become obsolete. Across generations, buy the example whose condition you understand and whose compromises you can accept. A documented repair is easier to reason about than an unsupported promise of perfection.

What sustains the appeal

  • A distinctive case-and-bracelet design expressed across genuinely different sizes.
  • Strong mechanical variety, from thin micro-rotors to integrated chronographs.
  • A rich documentary trail for comparing reference and specimen details.

What can erode the value

  • Large premiums can attach to small, poorly documented dial distinctions.
  • Polishing, replacement parts and incomplete bracelets affect both appearance and comparability.
  • Special-provenance auction records can distort expectations for ordinary examples.

A practical inspection

Before you buy

01

Identify the complete watch

Record full reference, metal, dial, movement, numbers, bracelet and clasp. Reconcile the invoice with the actual specimen.

02

Inspect case geometry

Compare both shoulders, bezel bevels, brushed surfaces and the bracelet junction under diffuse light. Request disclosure of restoration.

03

Check fit and completeness

Count supplied links, try clasp adjustment and inspect bracelet articulation. Obtain a replacement-link quote before purchase if needed.

04

Separate papers

List the original certificate, archive extract, service invoices, box, tools and spare parts individually; “full set” needs an inventory.

05

Demonstrate functions

Have a competent watchmaker check timekeeping, winding, calendar, correctors, chronograph and travel-time operation as applicable.

06

Write down the economics

Compare dated like-for-like prices, landed SGD cost, service allowance and a realistic resale channel before paying.

Collector questions

Is a 5711 always powered by the same movement?

No. The launch model used 315 SC, documented middle-period examples use 324 S C, and Patek dates the 26-330 S C change to 2019. Inspect the individual movement and documentation.[2][10][3]

Is the 2026 5810 a replacement name for the 5811?

No. The 5810 anniversary watches use the thin 240 micro-rotor and two hands. The 5811 uses 26-330 S C with date and central seconds. Their displays, thicknesses and edition status differ.[22][23][11]

Are all smaller Nautilus models quartz?

No. The current 7118 is automatic, while the 7010 is quartz. The historic 3800 is also automatic. Size, movement and reference must be checked together.[18][19][6]

Does an archive extract replace missing original papers?

No. Patek describes an extract as a partial archive transcription and the Certificate of Origin as the original identifying document supplied with the watch. The original certificate cannot be reissued.[31]

Can the Tiffany Blue charity price value my regular Nautilus?

No. That result concerns a particular limited-edition watch sold for charity in December 2021. An ordinary example needs comparable evidence for its own reference, condition and documents.[28]
