The collector’s perspective

The Aquanaut is best understood through its changing proportions, strap integration and movement generations; a colour or a “Jumbo” nickname is not enough to identify the watch.

The Aquanaut’s appeal starts where its case meets its strap. The embossed dial and flexible band create a continuous visual idea, while the rounded octagonal bezel retains enough polished metal to feel recognisably Patek Philippe. On the wrist, the experience can be lighter and less formal than an integrated metal bracelet. But the family is not uniform: early compact watches, precious-metal Jumbo models and thick chronographs behave very differently.

For a collector, the useful distinctions lie beneath the familiar Arabic numerals. A 5060 and a 5066 do not have the same case back; a 5065 Jumbo is not the same size proposition as a 5168 Jumbo; a quartz Luce Travel Time does not operate like a mechanical 5164. Even a long-running reference can change movement without changing its commercial identity. This guide separates those layers, and treats price evidence as a dated observation about a particular market or specimen.

Scope of this studyResearched 25 October 2026. Major generations, complications, smaller models and significant special editions are indexed. The guide does not claim to list every dial suffix, regional edition or private commission.

Design & inheritance

A lineage in time

1997

The Aquanaut arrives

Patek dates the family’s launch to 1997. The first steel watch pairs a black patterned dial with a matching composite strap.[1][3]

Late 1990s

A family of sizes and movements

The early range includes the larger automatic 5065, smaller automatic 5066 and quartz 5064/4960 branches. Auction catalogues differ on some introduction dates, so these are not reduced to a false exact chronology.[4][5][6][7]

2004–2005

Aquanaut Luce

The diamond-bezel Luce appears first in Italy and Spain in 2004 and internationally in 2005.[1]

2007

A new relationship between case and strap

The tenth-anniversary redesign brings the 5167 generation and a strap shaped to integrate closely with the case.[1][8]

2011

Travel Time

The mechanical 5164 adds local and home time, day/night displays and a local-time-linked date.[1]

2017–2018

Jumbo, research and chronograph

The white-gold 5168 and 500-piece Advanced Research 5650 arrive for the twentieth anniversary; the 5968 chronograph follows in 2018.[12][15][1]

2021–2023

A broader Luce and calendar vocabulary

The enlarged Luce generation adds quartz Travel Time in 2021. The first Aquanaut annual calendar, 5261R, arrives in 2023.[1][18]

2026

Milan edition

The 5167A-014 introduces a blue-gradient dial, red accents and Milano case-back inscription in a 250-piece edition.[26]

The reference library

Know what you are looking at.

A map of the major reference families covered in this study. Grouped numbers are related variants, not a claim that every dial or material shares identical specifications. Check the complete reference and the individual watch.

5060A

1997 first generation

Compact steel Aquanaut with dark textured dial and solid case back.

Movement 330-family automatic

Separate the original steel Aquanaut from similarly numbered transitional precious-metal watches.

[3][5]

5066A; 5066/1A; gold executions

Late 1990s–2000s

Compact automatic branch with sapphire display back; strap and bracelet configurations exist.

Movement 330 SC

The display back is a useful distinction from 5060; exact year and material need individual evidence.

[5]

5065A; 5065/1A; 5065J

Late 1990s–2000s

First-generation large-format or “Jumbo” automatic, with stronger checkerboard visual character.

Movement 315 SC family

A historic Jumbo is smaller than the modern 5168; verify supplied bracelet versus reference and papers.

[4][8][35]

5064

Late 1990s–2000s

Small steel quartz Aquanaut with date.

Movement E23 SC

A quartz watch is a legitimate early branch; check battery condition and service history.

[6]

4960; 4960/1

Early small-size branch

Small quartz Aquanaut, including steel bracelet examples.

Movement Quartz; inspect exact calibre

Do not borrow the dimensions or movement description of a modern Luce.

[7]

5067; 5068

Luce generation before 2021 redesign

Diamond-bezel steel quartz and rose-gold automatic branches respectively.

Movement Reference-specific quartz / automatic

Colour and stone-setting configuration require full-suffix identification.

[1]

5165A

2007 generation; discontinued

Smaller modern-design automatic, between the early compact format and 5167.

Movement 324 S C

Compare fit directly; the short-lived model is not merely a 5167 with a different dial.

[8][4]

[9][1]

5167/1A-001

Modern generation; discontinued in 2025

Steel Aquanaut delivered on a steel bracelet.

Movement Automatic; production-period dependent

A rubber-strap watch with an added bracelet is not automatically equivalent in original configuration.

[11][2]

5167R-001

Modern rose-gold family

Rose gold with brown dial and composite strap.

Movement Current: 26-330 S C

Inspect clasp and case hallmarks; colour and weight alone do not establish material or authenticity.

[18]

5072R-001

Luce Joaillerie

Rose-gold automatic with engraved mother-of-pearl dial and baguette-diamond bezel.

Movement Current: 26-330 S C

Assess the dial and setting as the intended factory composition, not merely as additional carat weight.

[23]

5062/450R; 5268/461G

Haute Joaillerie branches

Extensive factory gem setting; /461G is a distinct white-gold no-date execution.

Movement Current 5268/461G: 26-330 S

Do not apply the date-bearing 5268/200R specification to /461G.

[1][24]

7968/300R-001

Luce Rainbow Chronograph

Rose-gold flyback chronograph with coloured sapphires and diamonds, without a date.

Movement CH 28-520

The absence of C in the calibre designation accompanies the no-date layout; not a 5968 with added stones.

[22]

Singapore 2019 edition

Steel time-and-date Aquanaut with red accents and exhibition provenance.

Movement 324 S C in the documented 2019 example

Require matching reference, dial, case-back inscription and documents; a red strap alone proves nothing.

[25]

5167A-014

Watch Art Milan 2026; 250 pieces

Steel, 40.8 mm; blue-gradient dial, red accents and midnight-blue composite strap.

Movement 26-330 S C

The Milano inscription and limited-edition specification separate it from both black-dial and Singapore versions.

[26]

The first generation is more varied than its nickname suggests

Patek fixes the collection’s launch at 1997. Early auction records show why a reference-level approach is necessary: a 5060 has a closed back, while the 5066 exposes its automatic movement through sapphire. The larger 5065 uses the 315 SC family rather than the smaller watch’s 330 family. The quartz 5064 and small 4960 belong in the picture as well; an early Aquanaut is not automatically a mechanical Jumbo.

Editorial assessment: these watches should be bought as individual historical objects. Study the grid pattern, printing, numerals, hands and date display together, then relate them to the documented reference. Ask about replacements and ageing rather than treating a warm lume colour as proof of originality. Auction catalogues disagree on some early introduction years and dimensions. A dated archive record for the actual watch is more useful than repeating a precise-looking chronology that cannot be reconciled.

[1][3][5][4][6][7]

The 2007 redesign changes the whole wrist experience

The modern 5167 generation changes the dial relief and fits the strap more closely to the case. The result is a more continuous transition than on the earlier models. The current steel 5167A measures 40.8 mm diagonally and 8.1 mm thick; the discontinued 5165 offers a smaller interpretation of the same generation. The current rose-gold 5167R keeps the time-and-date concept with a brown dial and strap.

Editorial assessment: compare early and modern watches on the wrist before deciding that the later design is an automatic improvement. The early pattern can appear more graphic; the modern integrated strap can look more resolved. Neither impression replaces a fit check. The head, clasp and strap should settle comfortably together, with enough adjustment for ordinary changes in wrist size. A precisely cut used strap may be perfect for the previous owner and unsuitable for you.

[1][9][8][10]

A long-running reference can conceal a newer movement

The 5167’s historical 324 S C and today’s 26-330 S C are not interchangeable descriptions of every example. Patek’s current technical sheet identifies the latter, with a 35–45-hour reserve. The 5168’s launch document likewise specifies 324 S C, while its current page lists 26-330 S C. Current 5164G Travel Time uses 26-330 S C FUS; the earlier family was documented with 324 S C FUS.

Editorial assessment: a seller should identify the actual calibre from the watch and paperwork, not copy the newest website specification. Ask for an unobstructed movement photograph and check that the described functions correspond to it. A manufacture year, first retail sale and later service date are three separate events. Do not infer an exact changeover date for every country or delivery batch from one example. The collector’s advantage comes from resolving the specimen, not memorising a universal year that may be wrong.

[9][12][13][14][1]

Strap, clasp and bracelet are part of the reference

The 5167/1A was delivered on a metal bracelet; Sotheby’s records its discontinuation in 2025, and it is absent from the current manufacturer collection. The rubber-strap 5167A remains listed. This makes original configuration worth establishing, especially when a watch is offered with both forms of attachment. The current product pages also specify a patented fold-over clasp, so a generic replacement should not silently be treated as the supplied component.

Editorial assessment: request photographs of the clasp inside and out, strap markings, ends and cut sections. Price a correct replacement before concluding that missing material is a trivial issue. A coloured strap can be enjoyable without turning a standard watch into a rare edition. For a bracelet watch, inspect link wear and confirm the wearable length. Accessories can be added later; the original certificate and a clear written inventory help distinguish completeness today from original delivery.

[11][2][9]

Two different ways to travel

The mechanical 5164 uses a solid local hour hand and skeletonised home hand, with separate day/night indications. Pushers on the left advance or retreat local time, and the date follows local time. The current white-gold watch is 40.8 mm wide and 10.2 mm thick. This is a purposeful increase in complexity over the base model, visible both on the dial and in the case.

The 5269R takes a different route: quartz calibre E23-250 S FUS 24H, crown-operated time-zone setting, a home-time day/night aperture and no date. Its 38.8 mm rose-gold case is 8.77 mm thick. Editorial assessment: a frequent traveller may reasonably prefer either. Consider readability, setting convenience and how often the watch will sit unworn. Quartz here is a functional choice, not evidence that the complication is merely decorative. Demonstrate both time displays and their day/night relationship before purchase.

[14][21]

Why the 5650G deserves its own category

The 2017 Advanced Research 5650G is a 500-piece white-gold Travel Time, not just a scarce dial treatment. Patek’s exhibition catalogue identifies two innovations in its 324 S C FUS: revised Spiromax balance-spring geometry and a compliant steel mechanism for time-zone correction. The launch material explains that the flexible mechanism reduces the relevant assembly from 37 parts to 12.

Editorial assessment: this is a watch for someone who wants to understand the engineering. Its visual treatment and specialised mechanism create a different collecting proposition from a standard 5164. Confirm the appropriate service route, complete documentation and any history of interventions. Treat claimed factory anomalies with particular care: an unusual dial feature needs strong provenance before it becomes a reason to pay more. A seller’s story about rarity cannot substitute for examination or contemporary records.

[15][16]

Chronograph and calendar: choose the information you will use

The 5968’s steel configuration combines orange chronograph accents with a 60-minute counter and calibre CH 28-520 C. It is a 42.2 × 11.9 mm watch, supplied with black and orange straps. White- and rose-gold versions broaden the family. Its counter layout differs from the Nautilus chronograph’s combined hours-and-minutes display; sharing a movement-family name does not make the watches functionally identical.

The 5261R, introduced in 2023, is the first Aquanaut annual calendar. Its 26-330 S QA LU drives day, month, date and moon phases; a running watch needs its annual calendar correction at the end of February. The rose-gold case measures 39.9 × 10.94 mm. Editorial assessment: the chronograph asks whether you enjoy timing events; the annual calendar asks whether you enjoy maintaining and reading a calendar. Choose the display and setting routine you will actually welcome, not merely the longer specification list.

[17][18]

Luce is a substantial part of the collection

The current Luce branches require careful separation. The 38.8 mm steel 5267/200A is quartz, while the similarly sized rose-gold 5268/200R is automatic. The 5072R combines an engraved mother-of-pearl dial with a baguette-diamond bezel. The white-gold 5268/461G uses no-date calibre 26-330 S, which should not be confused with the date-bearing 5268/200R.

The Rainbow 7968/300R goes further: a mechanical flyback chronograph with coloured sapphires, diamonds and no date, powered by CH 28-520. Editorial assessment: these are distinct watchmaking and jewellery compositions, not optional decorations for a 5167. Judge stone alignment, setting quality, case condition and exact factory configuration together. Men’s and women’s labels can help navigate a catalogue, but wrist fit and preferred operation are more useful buying criteria. Factory-set provenance remains essential when comparing a jewellery watch with an aftermarket conversion.

[19][20][23][24][22]

Special editions must be identified by more than strap colour

The Singapore 5167A-012 is documented with exhibition-specific details and 324 S C. The current 2026 Milan 5167A-014 is a separate 250-piece edition: blue-gradient dial, red seconds hand and minute track, midnight-blue strap, 26-330 S C and a Milano 2026 case-back inscription. Similar accent colours do not make these the same reference.

Editorial assessment: assemble a configuration checklist from the manufacturer’s record before examining a purported special edition. Compare dial, hands, case-back treatment, clasp and reference on the certificate. Demand a credible chain of ownership for a substantial special-edition premium. A strap is replaceable and an inscription can be copied; neither alone proves an edition’s identity. Avoid assigning an ordinary black-dial watch the value of a regional edition, a retailer-signed example or an exceptional auction lot.

[25][26]

Editorial assessment

A different entry into Patek’s design language

Editorial assessment: the Aquanaut gives Patek Philippe a sporting identity built around a patterned dial and composite strap. Beside the manufacture’s traditional dress watches and elaborate complications, its relevance is design continuity combined with everyday legibility and, in the 5164, useful travel functionality. The 5650G adds a technical research chapter, while Luce makes the family broader than a single steel status watch. None of these roles depends on an assumed share of brand sales.

Long-term collector interest could benefit from identifiable generations, correct early examples and complications that owners continue to enjoy. It could suffer when buyers pay primarily for a replaceable strap colour, unsupported edition claims or a premium detached from the specific watch. Replacement cost, service needs and the dealer spread can materially reduce the benefit of a lower purchase price.

A compact 5066, larger early 5065 or modern 5167 answers a different collecting question. Compare current quotations and condition rather than ranking them by nickname. The 5650G may reward an engineering-focused collection; a Luce quartz model may offer more personal value to someone prioritising size and convenience. Neither preference predicts appreciation.

[1][4][5][9][14][15][19][29]

Condition is a series of specific observations

Patek’s archive FAQ distinguishes the original Certificate of Origin from a later Extract from the Archives. The certificate is not reissued; the extract records historical information. For a used Aquanaut, combine those documents with an actual inspection. Christie’s 5064 condition report is instructive in its specificity: it discusses polishing, localised nicks, clasp wear and a service recommendation rather than relying on a single condition adjective.

Editorial assessment: ask for equivalent detail on the watch you are considering. Examine the bezel’s brushed surface and polished border, the case around the crown and the strap junctions. Request disclosure of dial, hands, crown, clasp and movement replacements. An authentic service component and an original component are different descriptions. Neither a complete box set nor a convincing external signature can authenticate a watch whose movement has not been examined by a competent person.

[32][6]

A sporting design still needs current service evidence

Patek’s current pages state 30 m water resistance for the principal Aquanaut models discussed here; older official documents often state 120 m. Its current care guidance explains permitted aquatic use for water-resistant watches and directs owners to their model’s instructions. It also advises against operating controls underwater or while wet. Historical depth figures should not be treated as a pressure-test certificate for a second-hand watch.

Editorial assessment: obtain a recent assessment before exposing an older watch to water, and agree the service scope before any cosmetic work. Keep the original condition photographs and invoices. A rubber-like strap does not protect the movement from every shock, nor does it make a precious-metal case immune to wear. Include service cost, replacement straps and time without the watch in the ownership budget. For quartz models, a stopped watch needs diagnosis rather than an assumption that every problem is a flat battery.

[33][9][12]

The useful comparison is a complete Singapore purchase

Editorial assessment: quote the actual watch in SGD, with reference suffix, year evidence, movement, strap or bracelet, clasp, paperwork and service position in writing. A low overseas price may be for a cut strap, an incomplete set or an example that needs work. Compare the same configuration and obtain current photographs; the dealer listing in our price evidence explicitly uses a sample image, which is not enough for a condition decision.

Add foreign-exchange and payment costs, insured transport and applicable import treatment before comparing with a local offer. Singapore’s official arrival guidance requires declaration and payment for goods above the relevant GST import relief. Check the current rules for the route and purpose of your purchase; personal travel and commercial importing are different situations. Preserve invoices and ask about the realistic local resale channel. An advertised retail price does not tell you what a dealer will pay to acquire the same watch.

These prices describe five different pieces of evidence. The WatchCharts number is a model estimate, the manufacturer figure is a regional retail price, the two auction figures are historical transactions and the dealer figure is an advertised ask. They cannot be turned into a single “Aquanaut price” without losing the reference, material, condition and timing that give each observation meaning.

Editorial assessment: use the estimate to orient a search, then build a small set of genuine comparisons. Ask for the cash purchase bid as well as the retail ask to understand the acquisition spread. A 5168G result cannot establish the value of a 5167A; a scarce edition cannot establish a standard watch’s premium. Currency movements, service needs, documents and immediate resale costs can outweigh an apparent bargain. None of these observations establishes future returns.

Buying in SingaporeCompare the final price for the actual watch, with currency, seller fees, delivery, applicable taxes, service needs and bracelet or strap costs made explicit. Ask for a current written SGD quotation. A published overseas figure is not a local dealer buyback offer, and a listing does not prove a completed sale.

Editorial assessment

Choose a generation before choosing a colour

Editorial assessment: an early 5060 or 5066 suits the collector interested in compact proportions and documentary research; a 5065 adds the first-generation Jumbo idea. The 5167 is a clear expression of the modern design, provided its movement generation and complete strap-and-clasp arrangement are understood. The 5164 is particularly persuasive when its travel function answers a real need.

The larger 5168, chronograph 5968 and varied Luce references should be tried on rather than ranked from photographs. The 5650G belongs to a more specialised technical collection. Across the range, a correct, honestly described watch with a known service position offers a stronger foundation than an exciting colour with weak provenance. Buy the architecture and functions you will enjoy, then insist that the evidence supports the premium.

What sustains the appeal

  • A coherent dial-and-strap design with substantial differences between generations.
  • Useful travel and calendar functions alongside specialist research and jewellery pieces.
  • Several legitimate sizes and quartz as well as mechanical options.

What can erode the value

  • Cut straps, missing clasps and altered attachment configurations can complicate ownership.
  • Long-running references are often advertised with the wrong movement generation.
  • Special editions and retailer signatures demand more provenance than visual resemblance.

A practical inspection

Before you buy

01

Resolve the generation

Confirm full reference, case material, actual calibre and manufacture/sale evidence. Do not apply today’s specification to every older watch.

02

Check strap and clasp fit

Inspect cut length, strap markings, attachment and clasp. Establish the cost of any correct replacement before purchase.

03

Document original configuration

Separate original delivery from later additions such as a bracelet, coloured strap or service dial. List every accessory supplied.

04

Inspect condition closely

Obtain clear diffuse-light photographs and professional movement examination. Ask specifically about polishing, repairs, lume and replacement components.

05

Test the complication

Check Travel Time and local date together, or demonstrate calendar and chronograph operation with competent assistance.

06

Compare dated total costs

Match reference, material, set and condition, then calculate landed SGD cost, service allowance and the acquisition/resale spread.

Collector questions

Are the 5065 and 5168 both Jumbo Aquanauts?

The nickname is used for both, but they belong to different generations. The 5065 is the larger early Aquanaut; the current white-gold 5168 measures 42.2 mm. Compare the actual case and fit rather than the nickname.[4][13]

Does every 5167 use calibre 324 S C?

No. Older official material lists 324 S C, while the current 5167A and 5167R pages list 26-330 S C. Check the individual movement and records rather than inferring it from the reference alone.[1][9][10]

Is the steel bracelet Aquanaut still in the current collection?

The 5167/1A bracelet version is reported discontinued in 2025 and is absent from the current manufacturer collection checked here. The 5167A-001 on composite remains listed. Neither fact establishes dealer stock.[11][2]

Are all Aquanaut Luce watches quartz?

No. The 5267/200A is quartz, the 5268/200R is automatic, and the 7968/300R is a mechanical flyback chronograph. Luce is a design branch, not a movement designation.[19][20][22]

What makes the 2026 Milan edition different?

The 5167A-014 is limited to 250 pieces, with a blue-gradient dial, red accents, midnight-blue composite strap and Milano 2026 case-back inscription. It uses 26-330 S C and is distinct from the 2019 Singapore edition.[26][25]

Can a coloured strap establish that a watch is a rare edition?

No. Establish the complete factory reference and compare dial, hands, case back, calibre and documentation. A replaceable strap is only one component of the configuration.[26][32]
